We're plannnig two trip to the "AUD" wreck on 21/April/2016 to mark the Centenary of its scuttling as part of our 1916 commemorations. Weather permitting we will survey the wreck with Sidescan sonars. Depending on underwater visibility conditions, we'll deploy the ROV .
Captained by Karl Spindler, the AUD successfully brought 20000 guns, 5,000,000 bullets and other ordnance from Germany to Ireland for the Irish volunteers of the 1916 rising. Unfortunately, without a radio, the crew did not know of changes in the Rebels plans and were eventually discovered by the Royal Navy's ship HMS Bluebell off the Kerry coast where she was awaiting contact.
Under escort and now only a few miles from the naval base of Cork, the captain detonated charges, placed in the hold before the voyage in case of this exact eventuality. The AUD sank rapidly and now lies at 45m approximately 5nm from the mouth of Cork harbour - very near the Daunt rock.
